Emeritus Professor Alpers to Receive Distinguished Africanist Award
The Meyer And Renee Luskin Department of History and especially the African History field is very proud to share that our dear colleague emeritus professor Edward (“Ned”) Alpers was selected as this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Africanist Award.
This award is presented annually by the African Studies Association (ASA) “to honor scholars who have contributed a lifetime of outstanding scholarship and service to the field of African studies.”
Ned has chaired and co-chaired more than 60 doctoral committees at UCLA and internationally. He is a pioneer of Indian Ocean studies and in the study of East African history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The award will be presented to Ned at the next ASA meeting this December. He will be recognized for his extraordinary contributions to the field of African history and for his service to the ASA.
