Emerita Professor of Modern British Social and Cultural History, University College London; Chair of the Centre for the Study of British Slave-ownership; Fellow of the British Academy.

Author, most recently, of (with Nicholas Draper, Keith McClelland, Rachel Lang and Katie Donington) Legacies of British slave-ownership: Colonial slavery and the formation of Victorian England (Cambridge University Press, 2014); and Macaulay and Son: Architects of Imperial Britain (Yale University Press, 2012). Also Civilising Subjects: Metropole and Colony in the English Imagination 1830-1867 (Polity and Chicago University Press, 2002) and many other books and articles.
