Benjamin Cowan (PhD 2010)

Congratulations to Benjamin Cowan (PhD 2010) on the publication of his book, Securing Sex: Morality and Repression in the Making of Cold War Brazil, by the University of North Carolina Press.

The book benefited from support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the UCLA Institute for Social Research, among others. Cowan is an assistant professor in the History Department of George Mason University and had this to say about his latest publication: “It feels like the culmination of a journey that took me to places I never thought I would go; as I continued my research, and my understandings of what I was looking at deepened, I found my argument taking new and unexpected turns. Usually that was really exciting! Of course, my ability to think about all of this, and take my analysis where it needed to go, depended on the warm, collegial support of my colleagues—in the field, in my department, and at conferences and meetings. It’s a process as personal as it is collaborative—and I’m so pleased with the results.”
