Ben Madley

Congratulations to Ben Madley for receiving the inaugural Heyday Books History Award.

Heyday Books, founded in 1974, in Berkeley, is a statewide publisher which celebrates and explores California’s history, environment, and gives voice to its indigenous peoples, publishing a magazine, “News from Native California.”

Heyday Books decided that Prof. Benjamin Madley should be the first recipient of the new annual Heyday History Award, for his indispensable book, An American Genocide: The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe, 1845-1873 (Yale University Press), which does for the catastrophe that befell California’s native peoples what, in an earlier period, the historian Raul Hilberg did in his magisterial THE DESTRUCTION OF THE EUROPEAN JEWS.  Professor Madley graciously accepted the award last Thursday evening before a sold-out crowd of two hundred people at the annual gala fundraising Harvest dinner, held at the Julia Morgan-designed Berkeley City Club.
