California’s Native American Heritage Commission Published the Digital Atlas of California Indians
On September 23, California’s Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC) published the Digital Atlas of California Indians. Our own Benjamin Madley has been working on this project for several years and serves as an advisor. Developed in partnership with the California Department of Parks & Recreation with generous financial support from the DRAM Antitrust Settlement, the Digital Atlas of California Indians is a free online tool built to help students and the public visualize California before, during, and after European occupation, with a focus on the Native American experience. The Digital Atlas of California Indians also links the primary-source evidence presented by Madley in his 2016 book An American Genocide, which catalogued hundreds of instances of lethal violence against California Indians by vigilantes, state militiamen, and the U.S. armed forces.
