Gregory Sattler Published in Kyushu University’s Journal of Asian Humanities
PhD student Gregory Sattler’s new article “The Ideological Underpinnings of Private Trade in East Asia, ca. 800–1127” was published in Kyushu University’s Journal of Asian Humanities. Gregory’s article examines the close relationship between merchants and officials in East Asia, and demonstrates a continued use of diplomatic conventions in Sino-Japanese private trade from the late ninth to early twelfth century. He challenges the narrative that Japan’s diplomatic initiatives had ceased by this time, while calling for a reassessment of Confucian perspectives toward commercial exchange.
