Emeritus Professor Saul Friedlander Awarded Prestigious Balzan Prize
Our emeritus colleague Saul Friedlander was awarded the Balzan Prize. Given by the International Balzan Prize Foundation, the award honors four scholars and scientists each year who are distinguished on the international level. An eminent historian of Modern Europe and a Holocaust survivor and historian, Professor Friedlander contributed significant work on Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Professor Friedlander, who taught at UCLA from 1987 to 2011, has previously received many other honors. He was a Macarthur Fellow in 1999; he won a 2008 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book The Years of Extermination: Nazi Germany and the Jews, 1939–1945; and the following year, he received the American History Association Award for Scholarly Distinction, among other distinctions. Professor Friedlander is the third UCLA historian—joining professors Nikki Keddie and Carlo Ginzburg—to have received the Balzan Prize.
