Gregory Sattler to Present at Princeton University Conference
On June 16, Ph.D. student Gregory Sattler will present at The Conference on Tang-Song Transitions at Princeton University. His presentation, titled “Zhedong Sea Merchants and the China-Japan Trade, ca. 800–1000 CE,” will introduce a network of sea merchants from China’s Zhedong (Zhejiang) region that is only identifiable in Japanese primary sources. Although this group monopolized sea trade for 150 years, Gregory will propose that the network of Fujian-based merchants that replaced them in the eleventh century did so in cooperation with court officials of a newly emergent Song dynasty.
