Prof. Benjamin Madley Explores History of California Indigenous Law

UCLA History Professor Benjamin Madley joins the UC School of Law, San Francisco as Visiting Professor of Indigenous Law for the 2023-2024 academic year. Collaborating with UC Law San Francisco Indigenous Law Center Director  Jo Carrillo, Madley will research the legal landscape impacting California Indians. This interdisciplinary project, supported by UCSF Law alumni donor Joseph Cotchett ’64, will culminate in an edited volume and a seminar series exploring crucial legal-historical issues. Madley, acclaimed for his 2016 book, An American Genocide: The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe, 1846-1873, will thus continue his research on California Indians and the law.
