Lisl Schoepflin (PhD 2023) Awarded 2023 Thomas E. Lifka Dissertation Prize
Lisl Schoepflin’s dissertation, “Making Inca History: Authors and Artists in the Murua Manuscripts on the History of Peru, 1588-1616” was awarded the 2023 Thomas E. Lifka Dissertation Prize for the best dissertation in the Department of History. The Committee members praised the dissertation’s originality through its innovative use of collaborative manuscripts from friars and indigenous elites during the late 16th century. The introduction of new and original archival sources is compelling and reflects Andean (indigenous) voices, which is unusual in the historiography. The Committee also appreciated how the dissertation challenges “the prevalent notion of a single Iberian author and a universal Andean history.” It thus makes a substantive impact on Incan history, the history of early colonial Peru, the history of literacy and the booky, and early modern history in the trans-Atlantic world.
