Professor Emeritus Dan Howe Passes Away
We are sad to announce that Professor Emeritus Daniel Walker Howe passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025. Dan specialized in the early national period of US history, especially intellectual and religious history. He received many awards and honors in his long and successful career, including the Pulitzer Prize for History in 2008 for his most famous book, What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848. He was a fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Historical Society.
Professor Howe received his BA from Harvard and his Ph.D from Berkeley and taught at Yale University before joining a very talented group of US historians at UCLA from 1972-1993. He served as department chair from 1983 to 1987. In 1993 he moved to England to become Rhodes Professor of American History at Oxford University until 2002.
