Biography

My research explores the relationships between gender, property, and women’s position in the family in late Ottoman Beirut.

My dissertation looks at the relationship between gender and the circulation of commodities among family members in late Ottoman Beirut. It seeks to answer the following questions: how did gender affect women’s access to property, and how was women’s position affected by their access or lack of access to property? It further seeks to historicize the current sectarian personal status system, by looking at the ways in which women from different religious groups used the court system during the late Ottoman period.  My archives are in Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, and French.
