Ben Madley Wins the Inaugural Robert W. Cherny Award
Ben Madley’s article for the Pacific Historical Review, “California’s First Mass Incarceration System: Franciscan Missions, California Indians, and Penal Servitude, 1769-1836” is the inaugural winner of the Robert W. Cherny Award for an outstanding article in U.S. labor or political history published in the Pacific Historical Review or elsewhere by a member of the Pacific Coast Branch of the American Historical Association. This article appeared in a special issue of the Pacific Historical Review titled “The Carceral West,” edited by Kelly Lytle Hernández.
