Congratulations to Madina Thiam, who has been selected for a Mellon/American Council of Learned Societies Dissertation Completion Fellowship (DCF) for her dissertation, From Mecca to Jamaica: a Global History of Freedom in the West African Sahel, 1805-1960. Muriel McClendon was named one of six faculty members from across the university to receive the Distinguished Teaching Award for Senate Faculty. She received the added honor of the “Eby Award for the Art of Teaching,” in light of her contribution to learning at UCLA and in a number of domains.

Avery Weinman (PhD candidate) published an article, “Democratized Archives in an Enforced Digital Age,” on the Journal of the History of Big Ideas Blog. In it, she considers how historians’ restriction to digital archives in the era of coronavirus-related closures sharpens pre-existing questions about archives themselves, and salutes the joy of working in sweatpants.
